UK energy bills to rise by 80% in October as regulator announces hike

Electricity and gas bills in the UK are being hiked by an average of 80% from next month.

Regulator Ofgem declared it a crisis requiring decisive government action on an urgent basis.

According to British media, energy bills in the UK will increase by an average of $4,188 in October 2022 compared to October 2021.

Jonathan Brearley, CEO of Ofgem, said the increase would hit people across the UK hard and bills are likely to rise even further in January as Russia cuts off UK gas supplies.

He said that the new Prime Minister of Great Britain will need to take immediate steps in this regard as soon as he takes office in September. He said that the response of the new prime minister should be in accordance with the scale of the crisis.

Many countries around the world are facing an increase in the prices of energy sources and measures are being taken to prevent the increase in bills in European countries, but Britain has lagged behind in the measures due to the search for an alternative to the Prime Minister.

British finance minister Nadeem al-Zhawi said in a statement on August 26 that he was working on a plan for the new government. He admitted that millions of citizens may face difficulties due to increases in the prices of energy sources.
