Death toll rises to nine in Italy glacier collapse

The death toll from an avalanche in the Italian Dolomites on Wednesday rose to nine after two more bodies were found, officials said.

According to details, part of the country’s largest alpine glacier gave way on Sunday, in a catastrophe caused by snow and rock falling down the mountain, which Italy blamed on climate change.

According to Trentino President Maurizio Fogatti, the number of confirmed victims is nine.

He said in a tweet that three others were still missing, adding that the search for missing people using drones was ongoing.

The latest death toll comes as some families have accused authorities of leaving the glacier open despite the apparently dangerous mountaineering conditions.

An avalanche fell a day after a record high temperature of 10 degrees Celsius was recorded on the top of Marmolada, the highest mountain in the Italian Dolomites.
