China launched its third aircraft carrier on Friday, according to state media reports, marking a major military advance toward Asian power.
The launch ceremony for the Fujian was held at Shanghai’s Jiangnan Shipyard, with state broadcaster CCTV describing it as “the first catapult-type aircraft carrier designed and built entirely by China.”
China’s new carrier is named after Fujian Province on the country’s southeastern coast, following the tradition of naming its first two careers after Liaoning and Shandong provinces.
