17 people found dead in South African nightclub
The death toll at a makeshift nightclub in the southern South African town of East London has risen to 20, a senior security official said on Sunday.
“The number has risen to 20. Three died at the hospital. But there are still two who are in critical condition, “Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe, head of the provincial government’s safety department, said on local TV.
The victims ranged in age from 18 to 20.
Unconfirmed photos shared on social media show bodies showing no signs of injuries, scattered on the club floor.
Local television showed police officers trying to calm a crowd outside the club in the city, which is located about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) south of Johannesburg on the Indian Ocean coast.
