Sri Lankan President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has declared a state of emergency following the escalation of protests against the country’s extraordinary economic crisis.

President Gotabaya Raja Paksha has also ordered the army to arrest protesters and other suspects without a warrant.

According to an official statement, the state of emergency was declared in order to maintain law and order in the country.

It should be noted that Sri Lanka is facing severe shortage of food, basic necessities and fuel and gas these days and this South Asian country is facing the worst financial crisis in its history.

Yesterday, thousands of angry people also staged violent demonstrations outside the President’s private residence on the outskirts of Colombo.
